Pussy Riot trial: Samutsevich released
Today, in a move unexpected by all those present in the hall of the Moscow City Court, which was holding appeal hearings for the group “Pussy Riot”, the judge changed the sentence issued by Judge Larissa Polyakova in the Khamovniki district court to Ekaterina Samutsevich to two year suspended sentence. The reason for this decision could be the performance of Samutsevich’s new lawyer, Irina Khrunova, who read out the text of her appeal, from which, it finally became clear that Samutsevich simply did not reach the pulpit on that day, and was detained by security guards from the Church of Christ the Saviour on her way there. Immediately after the hearing, Ekaterina Samutsevich was released in the courtroom. The three lawyers involved in the process from day one, said that the outcome was thanks to Irina Khrunova, who was representing the Samutsevich’s interests today.
The lawyer Irina Khrunova explained that there is still a possibility of appealing the sentence. “This is definitely not the final victory”. It has been said that Katya [note: nickname for Ekaterina] Samutsevich has appealed to the European Court of Human Rights, which has been signed by Khurnova as a responsible lawyer.
The decision of the Moscow City Court on the sentences of Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alekhina remains unchanged.

I’m happy for Katya [Ekaterina Samutsevich], even though the six months she was in jail and her conviction were a blatent miscarriage of justice at any rate.
