Fire in Moscow Metro Brings Capital to a Standstill

Fire in the Moscow metro

I don’t know if this is linked to Sobyanin’s resignation, but this morning, a fire happened in the Moscow metro.

[Note: in other news yesterday, Sobyanin, the mayor of Moscow, tendered his resignation.]

At about 8.30 this morning, a fire was noticed, the line was closed, people were saved, but it was better to take an alternative route.

1. The “Okhotny Ryad” Moscow metro station in the centre of the capital was closed to passengers. The reason was a fire in a high-voltage cable between the stations “Okhotny Ryad” and “Biblioteka imeni Lenina” on the Sokolnicheskaya line, the capital’s law enforcement agencies reported.

Trains on the section between “Park Kultury” and “Komsomolskaya” were temporarily halted. A few trains with passengers on were stopped in the tunnel.

2. 31 people needed medical help following the fire, the head of the capital’s Emergencies Ministry said on Wednesday.

“There were 31 reported injured, four people were hospitalised”, the statement says.

3. Train service will be resumed on the Sokolnicheskaya line of the Moscow metro before 13.30. This is reported by the press service of the capital’s department of transport.

UPD: Moscow metro service has been resumed after the fire – Emergencies Ministry

UPD2: Service has again been halted on the section between Okhotny Ryad and Biblioteka imeni Lenina of the Sokolnicheskaya line of the Moscow metro. This is according to the Moscow metro press service. The reasons for the line closure have not been reported, but some are saying that there is smoke again.

UPD3: Service on the Sokolnicheskaya line of the Moscow metro has been resumed for a second time after a short circuit. “Empty trains went out in test mode at 13.45. If there is no more smoke, then following trains will carry passengers.”
